UNIQUE CURTAIN WALLING AND WOOD FACADE FOR FAMOUS SITE

A bespoke combination of curtain walling with Accoya wooden panels provides a homage to ‘The Theatre’, Shakespeare’s first polygonal purpose-built theatre and precursor to The Globe originally on the same site.

PURPOSE OF THE WORK:

‘The Box’ on New Inn Broadway was formerly a one-storey factory which was demolished, and a new five-storey building was put in its place. A fantastic historical site where the original Shakespeare Globe Theatre once stood.

The new building celebrates the site’s international importance as the location of the archaeological remains of the theatre, now a scheduled monument, which was home to Shakespeare’s theatre company and pre-dates The Globe on the river Thames.

WHAT WE DELIVERED:

Structura was enlisted to design and install a ground floor entrance using large panoramic automatic sliding doors, a fire door and a plant room screen directly next to the doors including unique louvres. Bespoke accoya timber rainscreen panelling was installed onto the curtain walling to the façade, and roof glazing incorporating automatic smoke vents to the rear and side elevations.

New Inn Broadway required stringent safety measures due to the high footfall of pedestrians within the area. This involved road closures, night working and traffic control restrictions. On the back elevation above a staircase, Schuco roof glazing incorporating automatic smoke vents were added. The intricate work of piecing several sections of glass required mechanical lifting within a tiny courtyard was a testament to the experience and patience of our team.

The architect’s design required a bespoke façade. Structura was required to oversee the CWCT sequence B testing of this unique fabrication to ensure materials were fit for purpose and able to withstand the elements etc. We designed, fabricated and installed Schuco curtain wall FW60 on all five floors.

On front of this, beautiful  bespoke accoya timber rainscreen panelling was fitted. Accoya timber, a Japanese hardwood which is effectively burnt, had never previously been used in construction for this purpose. The architectural intention was to reflect the original monument’s construction materials. Once all safety specs were met, the fantastic installation of a truly bespoke finish could be completed.
