CURTAIN WALLING

Bespoke Façade Systems by Structura UK

Curtain walling is a high-performance architectural façade solution that delivers structural strength, weather protection, maximum daylight, and clean aesthetics for commercial, institutional, and refurbishment projects. At Structura UK, we design, engineer, manufacture and install precision curtain wall systems tailored to your project requirements, performance expectations and budget. With decades of experience working on complex and heritage façades, we provide a complete end-to-end service you can rely on – from early design advice through to installation and long-term aftercare.

Our curtain wall systems combine robust materials, tested performance standards and innovative detailing to meet air, water, structural and thermal requirements, and to integrate seamlessly with the rest of the building envelope. Designed for modern architecture, with specialist approaches for heritage and refurbishment scenarios, Structura UK curtain walls stand the test of time.

What Is Curtain Walling?

Curtain walling refers to a non-structural outer façade that spans between floors and provides weatherproofing, structural stability and a continuous vertical building envelope. Unlike traditional cladding, curtain wall systems are typically lightweight aluminium frames and high-performance glazed panels, sealed and fixed to a building’s structural frame without bearing the weight of the floors or roof.

These systems allow for floor-to-ceiling glazing, thermal breaks, concealed fixings and bespoke geometry, meaning architects and designers can achieve generous daylighting, improved energy performance and striking visual effects without compromising performance or durability.

Key Features of Curtain Walling

  • Large glazed areas with minimal sightlines.
  • Thermal performance with insulated frames and double/triple glazing.
  • Robust weatherproofing against wind, rain and air infiltration.
  • Flexible design options including unitised, stick-built or structural glazing.
  • Compatibility with other façade systems such as windows, doors, rooflights and atria.

How It Works

Structured for transparency, quality assurance and collaboration, our curtain walling workflow brings all stakeholders together to deliver predictable outcomes:

1. Project Consultation & Requirements Capture
We begin with a detailed conversation to understand performance targets, site constraints, aesthetics, budget and build programme.

2. Site Survey & Dimensional Verification
Our survey team captures existing conditions (especially on refurbishments) using accurate measurement techniques to ensure designs fit first time.

3. Design Development & Engineering
Using CAD/BIM platforms, we model the façade, detail connections and verify structural and thermal performance. We refine profiles, seals, fixings and performance criteria with the project team.

4. Specification & System Selection
We recommend the best curtain wall solution — whether thermally broken stick systems, unitised façades, or bespoke structural glazing — based on load analysis, buildability and cost optimization.
5. Fabrication & Quality Control
Curtain wall profiles, glazing and components are precision-manufactured to specification. Our quality control processes minimise fabrication variances and ensure compliance with specification standards.

6. Site Installation & Commissioning
Our certified installation teams coordinate with contractors to erect the curtain wall, integrate interfaces with windows, doors or cladding, and commission weatherproofing and performance criteria.

7. Testing, Certification & Handover
We complete air and water tests, structural inspections and provide detailed documentation, warranties and maintenance guidance for ongoing performance.

Specifications & Standards

Structura UK’s curtain wall systems are designed and delivered to meet key industry standards and best practice guidelines. These standards ensure curtain walling performs reliably in high wind loads, heavy rain conditions and over extended service lives, safeguarding building occupants and reducing maintenance costs:

Structural & Performance Standards

CWCT Performance Requirements
Air and water tightness, structural loading, deflection & durability criteria.

BS EN 13830
European standard for curtain wall products performance and testing.

BS EN ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
(where applicable)

Building Regulations Compliance
Thermal, fire, weather and durability requirements.

Materials & Engineering Specifications

Thermally Broken Aluminium Frames
Improved insulation and reduced cold bridging.

Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)
Double or triple glazing options for enhanced energy performance.

High-Performance Gaskets and Sealants
Designed for long-term weatherproofing.

Typical Project Timeline

Note: A typical curtain walling project will vary based on project size, system complexity, site access and testing requirements. Projects on occupied buildings, phased works or heritage sites may require longer programmes due to access, protection measures or specific performance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What performance tests do curtain walls undergo?

Curtain walls are assessed for air infiltration, water penetration and structural load performance. Testing can be conducted on-site or in accordance with CWCT and EN standards, depending on project requirements.

Can curtain walling improve building energy performance?

Yes. With appropriate thermal breaks, insulated glass units and specification, curtain wall systems can significantly reduce heat loss and improve thermal efficiency compared to older façade systems.

How long do curtain wall systems last?

With proper design, materials and installation, curtain wall systems can last several decades with routine maintenance.

Is curtain walling suitable for historic or listed buildings?

Absolutely. We specialise in adapting curtain wall systems for sensitive contexts, ensuring modern performance without compromising heritage.

How early should curtain walling be considered in a project?

Ideally, during schematic design stages. Early involvement ensures optimal integration with structural design, thermal requirements and other façade elements.

Do you provide maintenance after installation?

Yes. We offer maintenance, repair and inspection services to ensure curtain walling continues to perform and protect your building envelope.

What is curtain walling and how is it different from traditional cladding?

Curtain walling is a non-structural façade system made of aluminium frames and glazed panels that attach to a building’s structural frame. Unlike cladding, it often incorporates higher performance glazing, bespoke engineering and weatherproofing designed for large façade areas.

Related Services

Structura UK was retained as a specialist contractor by ETDE FM to carry out a complex re-glazing and refurbishment contract at The National Archives. The building was in full occupation throughout the works and it was critical that the daily operations of the building remained unimpeded. Structura UK’s professional approach to all aspects of the project ensured that the works where carried out on time and on budget. They were responsible for all aspects of the project, including the scaffolding and temporary works elements, replacement of 2,100m² of existing double glazed units and the refurbishment of the existing glazing system, replacement of the existing smoke vent and associated electrical works. Over 40,000 man hours were expended on the project during the 12-month on-site period without any major incidents or accidents. We would not hesitate to use Structura UK again.
